Routine Exams and Dental Cleanings

When dental plaque builds up on your teeth and gums, your first line of defense against it is to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once. However, when plaque calcifies into tartar, the only way to remove it and the oral bacteria it harbors is to visit your dentist for a professional checkup and cleaning. During each visit, we’ll carefully clean away all the traces of plaque and tartar that you may have missed with your toothbrush and floss. Then, we’ll carefully examine your teeth, gums, and oral tissues (sometimes with the help of digital X-rays) to ensure that they aren’t threatened by an existing issue, such as tooth decay or gum disease.

Oral Cancer Screenings

In addition to common issues like gum disease and tooth decay, your dentist will also ensure that your oral and overall health aren’t at risk from systemic issues such as oral cancer. A thorough oral cancer screening will reveal any abnormalities, such as ulcers or lesions, that might indicate the early development of oral cancer. If necessary, we can recommend you receive an oral tissue biopsy to more thoroughly diagnose whether or not you have the disease.

What Comes Next?

Your checkups and cleanings serve as a baseline for your continued good oral health. If an issue is detected, then we can discuss it with you and your specific treatment options for restoring your good oral health. In some cases, we may recommend that you receive additional treatment the same day to minimize any risks to your long-term oral health.
