Teeth Ridges: What Are They, Why Are They There, And Now What?

Posted on February 7th, 2019

When you take a closer look at your smile in the mirror or you zoom in on a picture, what do you notice? If you’re completely overtaken by the little ridges on the chewing edges of particular teeth, then you might not notice much else. We often find that patients feel worried about these little bumps, wondering if there’s something wrong, why their friends don’t seem to have them, and if there’s anything that can be done. If you’ve spent even the smallest bit of time stressing over this and your oral health, our Saxonburg, PA team is happy to tell you: You can stop! As for those details…

They’re Called Mamelons!

We are excited to inform you that those little ridges on the chewing edges of some of your teeth are called mamelons. What you didn’t experience in regard to your dental development was the way that your teeth formed beneath your gums. It goes something like this: Multiple lobes of dental tissue came together to form one tooth. The tips of those lobes, which were rounded, were present as your teeth made their way through your gum tissue. For some, the evidence of those lobes (mamelons or, as you may call them, ridges), are still present. For others, they naturally wore away throughout childhood.

They’re Just A Natural Part Of Your Anatomy

As mentioned, before you think there’s something wrong with your oral health, mamelons are just there. They’re a natural extension of the way your body produced teeth. They are not bad or good. So, keep in mind that if you’re completely okay with them being there, you don’t have to think about them or worry any more. They’re also more common than you might think!

We Can Remove Them, If You Wish (Or Not!)

Allow us to reinforce the fact that you don’t have to do anything to smooth away your mamelons. They don’t impact your oral health in the least! However, as you’ve noticed, they do impact the way your smile looks. Whether you just don’t like these little bumps or if you think they make your teeth look like “kid” teeth, we are happy to announce that cosmetic care can quickly make them a memory! See us soon for an easy approach to smoothing out your tooth edges.
