Care That’s Too Aggressive: What Happens (And What To Do)?

Posted on September 27th, 2018

When you’re too aggressive with your dental hygiene at home, it can yield results that are not exactly what you’ve been hoping for. Of course, you are brushing and flossing with all of your might because you want to keep your smile clean, so it remains healthy! Unfortunately, when your efforts rest at the most intense end of the spectrum instead of including very delicate care, you are running the risk of serious oral health problems. Didn’t think you could brush too hard or scrub your smile enough? Our Saxonburg, PA team is here to remind you that you absolutely can go overboard (and we’re happy to explain what you can do about it).

What Happens From Aggressive Brushing And Flossing?

Our team knows that you probably have excellent intentions for your smile. However, if you’re not careful with your dental hygiene, then you may press too hard and push past the line when it comes to protecting your oral health. Did you know that aggressive care can end up causing all sorts of issues for you? They may include:

  • Aggressive brushing and flossing will cause your gum tissue to pull back, which is something that’s dangerous for your smile and that we refer to as gum recession.
  • When you’re too hard on your teeth and gums, you can actually damage them and cause dental erosion! Again, this isn’t good for your smile.

What To Do When Damage Has Occurred

How You Should Be Caring For Your Smile (Things To Change)

You may wonder, then, what you should be doing to keep your smile safe through preventive care, so you can avoid a need for restorations (as you also avoid accidentally damaging your teeth and gums in the process). Of course, you need to change your approach and you may also wish to change some of the items you’re using if they are part of the problem. Think through some of our suggestions:

  • Change your toothpaste, so it is free of abrasive additives
  • Use soft toothbrush bristles exclusively
  • Be careful with your approach
  • Try an electric toothbrush if you can’t seem to press gently
  • Use a timer, too, so you don’t rush your cleaning
