Your Oral Health Q&A: The Key May Be More Water!

Posted on November 6th, 2018

When you’re not experiencing absolute success with your oral health, you may find yourself trying to predict what you will need to do to make things better. You may imagine that you need some type of complex dental treatments or that you will really need to overhaul your dental hygiene approach. What you might not be aware of, however, is that in many cases, the one thing a patient is missing is simply remembering to drink enough water. If this describes you, then follow along with our Saxonburg, PA team as we help answer questions that can make a world of difference for your smile!

Questions and Answers

Question: I’ve heard that I should be drinking about eight glasses of water every day but that’s not a very precise measurement. Can you be more specific?

Answer: To protect your general health and your oral health, too, you should be getting nearly 64 ounces of water daily. When you speak with your general practitioner, you may be able to arrive at a number more personal to your unique needs. In addition, feel free to ask further questions during your dental checkups.

Question: Does water just help rinse food and bacteria from my smile?

Answer: This is certainly one of the ways that it helps you maintain your oral health. However, in addition to rinsing bacteria, food particles, and acids (which helps neutralize your smile), it also does something else! It helps limit dry mouth (meaning it aids in keeping your saliva levels up). As you may already realize, your saliva acts as a natural rinsing agent, keeping your smile free of bacterial buildup (and debris and cavities!), while promoting a neutral pH.

Question: What if I’m not very good at remembering to drink water? Do you have any advice?

Answer: Of course. First, our team explains that you may consider choosing to carry a refillable water bottle with you that displays the fluid ounces. That way, you will see the bottle all day and can be reminded to fill it up again and again (as you track your intake). Or, as another method of protecting your oral health, you may select water as your primary beverage of choices over juice, coffee, soda, and more. You’ll be drinking it with meals and snacks, which is a win-win!
