Cracked, Chapped, Wintry Lips Q&A: What Can I Do?

Posted on December 18th, 2018

First, the idea of winter sounded so lovely. Sweaters! Boots! Snow! Hooray! Then, of course, your cracked, chapped, wintry lips kicked in and you started to suddenly remember those winter-related details you don’t love so much. Isn’t there some way to make this go away, you wonder, so you can save your lip health and turn back to feeling overjoyed and exhilarated about this chilly season? But of course! Make your way through our Saxonburg, PA team’s questions and answers and you’ll quickly receive the help you were hoping to receive.

Questions And Answers

Question: I haven’t changed anything about my usual habits but my lip health isn’t doing so well this winter. What can I start doing that’s easy and effective?

Answer: We suggest that you start applying lip balm to your lip tissue as frequently as you see necessary. If you aren’t in the habit of this, remember that it’s easy to do, budget-friendly, and can make a huge impact on your lip moisture if you’re consistent with it. (Choose anything that you like, as there are many options!).

Question: I have heard that it’s not good to let my face cleansing products (and more) come into contact with my lip tissue because it can have a drying effect or may cause irritation. Is this true? Is this a problem only in winter?

Answer: This is true! It may become a greater problem when skin dryness is a bigger problem due to the season (generally in winter and summer). So, we suggest you keep your lip area free of products unless they are specifically for this delicate tissue.

Question: I have heard that there are lots of dehydrating things that go on in winter (like mouth breathing from having the cold or flu or just from central heating). Is this really a concern and does it actually affect my lip health?

Answer: Your body is composed primarily of water! The answer is yes, of course, hydration plays into the supple, healthy nature of all of your body’s tissues. Increase water if you think you’re not drinking enough, so you can be sure to remain hydrated, healthy, and so you can protect your smile health!
